Archive October 2010
Hopefully you are recovering from an amazing night last night! I have a shoot today and am contemplating just showing up in all my leftover glitter and body paint. It’s appropriate on Halloween, right??
While I’m not a huge fan of YouTube makeup tutorials, there are some channels that I do really like. Checking out other people’s ideas are a great way to get inspiration for your own Halloween makeup!
Mother Earth Tutorial
Petrilude is one of the YouTube “gurus” that makes great Halloween videos. I love his Mother Earth look and the best thing about it is that you can adapt it to work with many different costumes.
Love it! Simple (kind of) and scary.
Poison Ivy Tutorial
The look is really cool but this chick needs some caffeine…
The characters from Avatar are all over 2010 Top Halloween costume lists. This is one of the best tutorials I found for the look. The music is annoying but you can mute it
Bloody French Tip Manicure Tutorial
Love this idea!! I wish I had longer nails so I could pull this off!
I’ve been posting about a lot of sales lately, so I almost decided against this one – luckily for you, this one’s just too good to pass up!
For the Makeup/Hair Artists:
If you’ve been meaning to print photos for your book, but find yourself putting it off, now is the perfect opportunity! Adorama’s 11×14 prints are on sale for $1.99 and you can choose between glossy, lustre or metallic finishes!
This is an amazing deal (they are usually $3.99 each!) and Adorama does great work (they’re who I use when I print photos).
Sale ends 11.3.2010

This year, MAC released an interactive Halloween competition! In the video below, three makeup artists must create a Halloween look. They are given 3 hours to work, and we vote for the winning creation!
Check out the video and don’t forget to vote for your favorite look on MAC’s facebook page by October 29th. What a great idea from MAC’s marketing team.
(This is the second “episode” of the challenge. The first episode was all kinds of boring but if you really want to see it, click here)
Which Look is Your Favorite??
Alessandra Ambrosio’s new editorial for Vogue Nippon’s December 2010 issue is amazing. She looks flawless, and even though I’m usually a strong advocate against blue lipstick, she pulls it off! Wish I could say the same for Ke$ha..
What Do You Think? Love it? Hate it?
It’s that time of year again!

First Biebs, then Serena Willams (which I’m not even going to get into at the moment), now Katy Perry. It seems like celebrity nail polish collections are become the new celebrity perfumes!
Unlike Justin Bieber, Katy Perry actually has grounds for such a collaboration. Her nails are always super fierce thanks to her amazing manicurist, Kimmie Kyees.
The Katy Perry Collection by OPI includes five shades:
Teenage Dream (a dreamy pink glitter)
Not Like the Movies (a sultry silver)
Last Friday Night (a fierce glittery blue)
The One That Got Away (an amazing deep berry)
I’m actually really excited about Black Shatter!! It’s a new top coat that creates a cracked leopard pattern when it dries over nail lacquer!
Some of Katy’s Recent Nail Designs:
The collection will be released in Ulta stores January 2011.
Last night actress Uma Thurman was a gust speaker at The Feminist Press at the City University of New York’s 40th annual gala. Unfortunately, it’s Uma’s makeup, and not her attendance that has people talking this morning. Just like Nicole Kidman last year (here), Miss Thurman’s face appears to have been overly powdered, resulting in white patches around her nose, eyes and forehead.
While most people assume that the malfunction is a result of haphazardly placed powder, I don’t think this is the case. I highly doubt the powder was completely visible in person, there were far too many people around her for nobody to have given her a heads up. Also, the severity of the whiteness is different from picture to picture
So What Happened??
While I’m not certain what happened in this particular incident, I have heard many reports of HD powder looking this way when applied too heavily. Combined with the lights and camera flashes, the whiteness would have become visible on film.
From the look of the rest of her makeup application, it doesn’t appear as if Uma used a makeup artist last night, so this could have been a case where the star applied the same products her makeup artists use, just not correctly.
